About Oman

General Information

Oman is a country of 309,500 km2, stretching over 1,700 km along the Arabian Gulf and the Indian Ocean. A large mountain range, the Hajar Mountains, traverses the terrain from Musandam in the north to Sharqiyah in the east. The mountain range reaches its highest point at Jebel Shams at 3009 m. The Sultanate has recently been divided into 11 governorates: Musandam, Muscat, Dhofar, Buraimi, Batinah North, Batinah South, Dhahirah, Dakliyah, Sharqiyah North, Sharqiyah South and Al Wusta . The landscape, history and traditions vary from region to region.

Climate

Temperatures vary from region to region. It is humid and hot on the coast and dry and hot inland. There are two seasons: summer from May to September with temperatures between 35 and 45°C, and winter from October to April with temperatures between 20 and 30°C. Salalah has a subtropical climate of around 30°C.

But June to September is monsoon season in this region and the average temperature is 23°C.

Currency

Omani Rials (OMR). One rial consists of 1000 baisa. Omani Rials can be purchased at the airport upon arrival. There are also ATMs in most major cities in Oman. The German EC card with the maestro symbol is mainly accepted by National Bank of Oman and HSBC. Cash can be withdrawn from most ATMs using the usual credit cards Visa and Mastercard . Traveler checks are only exchanged for the local currency at the reception in 5-star hotels. You can check the current exchange rate at www.xe.com/ucc/.

Opening Hours

Large supermarkets such as:
Lulu Hypermarket, daily from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Most souks open from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
on weekdays. On Fridays only in the afternoon. Fortresses from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 11: 00 a.m.
The Grand Sultan Qaboos Mosque from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Closed on Fridays and religious holidays. It is the only mosque in Oman that you can visit as a non-Muslim.
Fish markets are worth seeing early in the morning every day.

Dress Code

Due to the warm temperatures, light cotton clothing and comfortable running shoes are recommended. Please respect the country’s customs and wear clothing that covers the knees and shoulders. This applies to both men and women.
